Sometimes I lay my head on the pillow at night and wonder where on earth the day went….how another day managed to pass with still so many things on my to-do list?I try to rationalize by reminding myself of the progress I have made ~ the little things I accomplished that day to be present, to be real, to listen, to observe.  Things which become more important to me as my children outgrow shoes right before my eyes.Last night I had great intentions of spending the evening painting since we were blessedly home for the evening; instead, my daughter felt sick so we laid on the couch together reading about Mary and Laura chasing cattle from the haystacks in Little House on the Prairie.  Before long, the boys piled around so we sketched out a few games of Hangman on notebook paper.  When was the last time I played Hangman,…

Last Saturday morning I dropped my kids at an ice skating party and found myself with an hour and a half to kill.It didn’t take me long to decide where I was headed: The local thrift stores, of course!  I really don’t visit thrift stores often, maybe once a month….and one in particular I hadn’t frequented since last June when the rest of the fam was on a camping trip.  But if I’m out and about and have a few minutes to kill, thrift stores always call my name.Sometimes I walk through a thrift store and see absolutely nothing.  On these occasions, I don’t stay long.  I’ve thrifted long enough to know, for me, what’s worth stopping for.  I tend to walk slowly, letting my eye travel from item to item, but I certainly feel no pressure to pick something up or purchase unless my heart starts to do that thumpity-thump thing.  And…

Back in October the hubs and I began our Master Bedroom makeover.  This post shows some before and after photos from the weekend we painted the walls. We made some progress over the weekend in this space, experimenting with pillows and lamps and decor.  My favorite spot so far is definitely our “sitting spot for coffee.”My husband has longed for a “sitting spot” since our first 800sf house purchased in 1997.  13 years later his wish came true when we bought this house in 2010~ and we honestly never take it for granted.I snagged the cherry blossoms from the sitting room to fill that corner and add a natural element.  The printed pillow on the chair is Pottery Barn’s Jerri Bird collection, a beautiful tapestry of yellow, spa blue and taupe ~ which I discovered they no longer sell after having trouble with the matching duvet…but that’s another story. The pine armoire in the…

In between math lessons, Chinese calligraphy, and writing assignments with my kids this week, I’m working on making some headway to finish our master bedroom. We painted the walls and trim two weeks ago, so Monday evening I finished painting the two doors to match the trim.  Sherwin Williams Alabaster White ~ it’s a beautiful white.  I almost want to say it has a creamy look, but it’s certainly not yellowish.  It’s the same white I used on our fireplace surround.Yesterday, though, I began the transformation of our two nightstands.  We’ve had these nightstands for years; I originally purchased them at a liquidation store in Soldotna.  I remember seeing them for the first time and thinking, “LOVE!”  Although I’ve been gradually moving away from this wood tone in our home, the shape still delights me:I didn’t bother to haul them to the garage for painting ~ just whipped out an old drop…

I’m heading to Kenai for the weekend to celebrate a birthday with my what-seems-like life-long friend, Shelli.  So excited because she has a Keurig machine, a very quiet house, and HGTV.Does it get any better than that??As I head out the door today, I look around and see so many unfinished projects around here, but I think it’ll be good to get away, take a breather, and gain some fresh perspective.  Be it homeschool or design or life plans, a fresh perspective is always a good thing. When I return, I’m hoping to tackle the rest of our Master Bedroom makeover.  We still need some pops of color, a few new pieces of bedding, accessories…..all those little things that make it a representation of the M. and me.Here is a (night-time) picture of our master room Before.  What a difference curtain panels make! I also want to finally get a map…

You are going to think we are such hicks. But I’ll let you in on a secret.  We kinda are :-)With me being raised on a farm in Minnesota, and Mr. Wonderful growin’ up in a teeny weeny little town tucked into the mountains of Southeast Alaska, we were somewhat doomed when it came to high society, stylish upbringing. But we’re perfectly okay with that.  Our first mattress had tire tracks on it (yes, it was run over after flying out the back of our Toyota truck on a Montana highway~ one of the funniest stories ever), we’ve been known to use towel-draped cardboard boxes for tv stands, and for some reason we hold onto carpet remnants like they’re made of gold: “Surely we’ll find a use for one of these some day!”We’re kinda nuts.Which is why you won’t be completely surprised to see one of these should you walk into our bedroom right now:This is…
